St Barnabas Catholic Academy Trust

and our academies

St Barnabas Catholic Academy Trust was formed in July 2012 to administer a group of Catholic voluntary-aided schools which converted to academy status at the same time. It is a Company Limited by Guarantee, Company Number 08089246.

Its Articles of Association state that its principal object is:

‘to advance for the public benefit education in the United Kingdom, in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing by establishing, maintaining, carrying on, managing and developing Catholic schools designated as such (“the Academies”) which shall offer a broad and balanced curriculum and shall be conducted in accordance with the principles, practices and tenets of the Catholic Church and all Catholic canon law applying thereto including any trust deed governing the use of land used by an Academy both generally and in particular in relation to arranging for religious education and daily acts of worship and having regard to any advice and following directives issued by the Diocesan Bishop.’

Its functions include the power ‘to establish, maintain, carry on, manage and develop the Academies at locations to be determined by the Directors and in so doing shall have regard to the respective ethos and mission statement of each Academy as reflected in each Academy’s “School Prospectus’.

The Directors ‘may appoint separate committees to be known as Local Governing Bodies for each Academy’.

St Barnabas Catholic Academy Trust currently administers four schools, Trinity Catholic Secondary School and three of its feeder primary schools, namely, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, St Mary’s, and St Teresa’s; its fourth feeder school, St Augustine’s, is currently administered by St Augustine’s Catholic Academy Trust, but hopes to have the option to join St Barnabas Academy Trust later.

Each of our academies is governed by a Local Governing Body which undertakes a set of functions and responsibilities entrusted to it by St Barnabas Catholic Academy Trust under a Scheme of Delegation, in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding agreed between St Barnabas Academy Trust, The Nottingham Roman Catholic Diocesan Trustees and each particular Academy.

The principal functions delegated to each Local Governing Body are:

  • to have a monitoring role in connection with the Academy;
  • to consider budget monitoring information and to make recommendations to the Head Teacher in relation to annual budget proposals;
  • to govern the admission of pupils to and the exclusion of pupils from the Academy;
  • to support the Head Teacher in matters relating to the recruitment and employment of staff;
  • to monitor and be accountable for standards and to report at least annually to the Directors of the Academy.
